Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the abnormal growth of breast tissue in males. It is the most common presenting complaint of male breast disorders accounting for more than 65% of cases and often presents with chest wall/breast fullness that the patient is unable to reduce despite diet and exercise. This can often lead to emotional and psychological distress in men who are embarrassed by their condition.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia has a broad range of causes that are classified as either pathological or physiological. While true gynecomastia is an enlargement of the breast gland, many patients present with pseudogynecomastia which is breast enlargement due to increased fat deposition or a mixed picture in which both true and pseudogynecomastia are present.

When should I get surgery for it?

The degree of gynecomastia ranges from grade 1 (small breast enlargement localized around the areola) to grade 4 (marked breast and skin enlargement with feminization). Once a pathologic reason for your gynecomastia is ruled out and the gynecomastia is deemed persistent for >4 months, then surgery is likely the next option.
